The town's name derives from "Cathedral Canyon" to the south of the town, so named in 1850 by Henry Washington because its rock formations were reminiscent of a cathedral. Cathedral City is the third largest city in the Cathedral City and represents the very essence of Southern California living. Adjacent to Cathedral City, it is a city of pleasant neighborhoods, spectacular golf courses and luxurious country clubs.
